Constitution Day of India: Why 26 November Matters

Constitution Day remembers the adoption of India's Constitution and the democratic promise to secure justice, liberty, equality, and fraternity for all citizens.

India observes Constitution Day, or Samvidhan Divas, on 26 November. The Constituent Assembly adopted the Constitution on 26 November 1949; it came into force later on 26 January 1950, which is celebrated as Republic Day.

Why the Constitution matters

The Constitution sets out how India’s institutions function and how power is limited. It protects fundamental rights, describes the relationship between the Union and the states, and provides a framework for elections, courts, legislatures, and public accountability.

The Preamble

The Preamble describes India as sovereign, socialist, secular, democratic, and republican, and promises justice, liberty, equality, and fraternity. These ideas are a concise statement of the kind of public life the Constitution asks the nation to build.

A day for civic learning

Schools, courts, government offices, and civic groups may read the Preamble, conduct quizzes, and discuss constitutional rights and duties. Anyone can observe the day by reading the Preamble aloud, learning about a member of the Constituent Assembly, or understanding how to access public institutions.

The Constitution is a living framework. Its meaning depends not only on judges and politicians, but on how ordinary people treat one another and participate in democratic life.
