Ganga Dussehra Story and Significance: The Descent of the Ganges

Ganga Dussehra celebrates the descent of the Ganges from the heavens to earth. It falls on the tenth day of the bright half of Jyeshtha and is observed through bathing, prayer, lamps, charity, and offerings to the river.

Bhagiratha’s determination

The Ramayana and Puranic traditions tell of King Bhagiratha, whose ancestors needed liberation. He performed intense austerities to bring Ganga down from the heavens. The river’s force would have overwhelmed the earth, so Shiva received her in his matted hair and released her in a controlled stream.

The story joins three forms of effort: Bhagiratha’s persistence, Ganga’s purifying flow, and Shiva’s capacity to hold immense force without destruction. It is a story about turning a huge spiritual intention into a form that can nourish the world.

A river as sacred responsibility
