National Unity Day in India: Why 31 October Is Observed
National Unity Day remembers Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and invites reflection on the cooperation, constitutional values, and mutual respect needed to hold a diverse country together.
National Unity Day, or Rashtriya Ekta Diwas, is observed in India on 31 October, the birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. The day was introduced to recognize his contribution to India’s integration after independence.
Patel and political integration
At independence, the subcontinent included British provinces and numerous princely states. Patel, working with other leaders and administrators, played a major role in encouraging the princely states to join the Indian Union. The process involved negotiation, diplomacy, and, in some cases, conflict; it was a complex historical transition rather than a single event.
Unity in a diverse nation
Unity does not mean erasing language, religion, region, culture, or political difference. In a constitutional democracy, unity is stronger when diversity can exist with equal citizenship and shared commitment to the law.
How the day is observed
Schools and public institutions may conduct unity pledges, runs, discussions, and cultural programs. A meaningful observance is to learn about a tradition or region outside one’s own and practice cooperation without requiring everyone to become the same.
