Prakriti (Body Constitution) (प्रकृति)

Prakriti is a person's unique, unchanging dosha constitution set at conception — the Ayurvedic idea closest to a personal baseline or 'body type'.

Overview

Prakriti refers to the unique combination of Vata, Pitta, and Kapha a person is born with, said to be fixed at conception and to remain constant throughout life. It's the closest thing Ayurveda has to a personal baseline: not a diagnosis, but a description of what's naturally typical for that individual's build, appetite, energy, and temperament. Most people are a combination of two doshas — for example Vata-Pitta or Pitta-Kapha — rather than a single dominant one, and a smaller number are fairly balanced across all three. Prakriti is distinguished from vikriti, a person's current state, which does fluctuate with season, age, diet, and stress. The practical use of knowing your prakriti is as a reference point: if your natural constitution is Kapha-dominant but you're currently experiencing Pitta symptoms like heartburn and irritability, that's read as a temporary vikriti imbalance to correct, not a change in who you fundamentally are. Traditional assessment is done by an Ayurvedic practitioner through pulse, physical traits, and a detailed history, though simplified self-assessment questionnaires are common as an approximate starting point.

Benefits

  • Knowing your prakriti gives context for lifelong tendencies — build, appetite, sleep pattern, temperament.
  • It distinguishes what's naturally typical for you (prakriti) from a temporary imbalance worth correcting (vikriti).
  • It makes dosha-specific advice (diet, routine) easier to apply to your own situation rather than following generic rules.

How It Shows Up

A traditional prakriti assessment is done by an Ayurvedic practitioner, but a simplified starting point is to notice which dosha's traits (see the Vata, Pitta, and Kapha pages) most consistently describe your body build, appetite, sleep, and temperament across your whole life — not just how you feel today. Most people recognize a primary and secondary dosha rather than one pure type.

Prakriti as a starting point, not a label

Prakriti is descriptive, not prescriptive — it explains tendencies, not fixed rules. See Vata, Pitta, and Kapha for the traits each dosha contributes to a person’s constitution, and Ojas for the concept of vital reserve that’s said to support resilience across any constitution.
