Dhanteras Story and Significance: The First Day of Diwali

Dhanteras opens the Diwali season by honoring Dhanvantari, Lakshmi, and the responsible use of wealth, health, tools, and household resources.

Dhanteras is the first major day of the Diwali season. The name joins dhan, meaning wealth, with teras, the thirteenth lunar day. Families clean their homes, light lamps, worship Lakshmi and Dhanvantari, and often buy a useful metal object as a symbol of auspiciousness.

Dhanvantari and the ocean of milk

One major tradition connects Dhanteras with Dhanvantari, the divine physician who emerged from the churning of the cosmic ocean carrying a vessel of amrita. This association makes health and healing central to the day—not only financial prosperity.

Lakshmi and household prosperity

Dhanteras is also connected with Lakshmi, whose presence is welcomed through clean entrances, lamps, and honest livelihood. Wealth in this context includes food, health, knowledge, tools, supportive relationships, and the ability to share with others.

A mindful way to observe

Repair or clean something that supports daily life, offer food to someone in need, and light a diya safely. You can recite the Dhanvantari Mantra or Lakshmi Mantra. Buying something is optional; responsible use of what you already have is equally meaningful.

Dhanteras puja at home

A simple Dhanteras puja can begin with cleaning a small space and placing a diya safely near the entrance or altar. Offer flowers, water, seasonal fruit, or a homemade sweet if available. Some families place tools, books, account ledgers, or medicines near the worship space to acknowledge the work and care through which a household is sustained. The object itself is not magical; it becomes a reminder to use resources responsibly.

Before the prayer, make a short list of the forms of wealth already supporting your life: health, food, skills, relationships, time, and the ability to help. After the aarti, turn one intention into an action, such as paying someone on time, repairing a useful item, reducing waste, or making a donation. This connects Lakshmi Aarti with ethical prosperity.

Is buying gold necessary on Dhanteras?

No. Buying gold, silver, utensils, or another useful item is a custom in some households, not a universal requirement. A sincere prayer, safe lamp, act of generosity, and gratitude are meaningful ways to observe Dhanteras without unnecessary spending.
