Abhimanyu: Arjuna's Son, the Chakravyuha and His Last Stand

Abhimanyu was the teenage son of Arjuna who entered the deadly chakravyuha formation knowing he could not get out. Here is his story, what the chakravyuha was, and why his death changed the war.

An illustrated scene from Hindu sacred stories showing a young warrior surrounded in battle

Abhimanyu was the son of Arjuna and Subhadra, Krishna’s sister, and one of the bravest warriors of the Mahabharata. On the thirteenth day of the Kurukshetra war, aged about sixteen, he broke into Drona’s deadly chakravyuha formation knowing he did not know the way out. Trapped and surrounded by several Kaurava warriors at once, he fought until he was killed.

His death is often called the most heartbreaking moment of the war, and it pushed Arjuna to the fiercest vow of his life.

Birth: the moon’s son on earth

The Adi Parva says Abhimanyu was a partial incarnation of Varchas, son of the Moon god. When the gods descended to earth to take part in the great war, the Moon agreed to send his son only on the condition that he return after sixteen years. Abhimanyu would perform a deed that amazed the world and then come back to heaven. His short life was foretold from the beginning.

The chakravyuha lesson in the womb

The best-known story about Abhimanyu comes from popular tradition. While Subhadra was pregnant, Arjuna described to her how to break into the chakravyuha. The unborn child listened. But before Arjuna could explain how to come out, Subhadra fell asleep — so Abhimanyu learned only half.

In the Mahabharata text itself, the explanation is simpler: on the thirteenth day, Abhimanyu tells Yudhishthira that his father taught him how to break into the formation but not how to get out of it in an emergency. Either way, he went in knowing the risk.

Marriage to Uttara

During the Pandavas’ thirteenth year in disguise at King Virata’s court, Arjuna lived as Brihannala, a dance teacher to the princess Uttara. When the Pandavas revealed themselves, Virata offered Uttara to Arjuna in marriage. Arjuna declined, saying he had been like a father and teacher to her, and proposed his son Abhimanyu instead. The wedding was celebrated with Krishna present.

What was the chakravyuha?

Feature Description
Shape Concentric circles of warriors, sometimes described as a lotus (padmavyuha)
Movement The rings rotated, so a gap that opened one moment closed the next
Design Drew attackers inward while sealing the path behind them
Who could break it Arjuna, Krishna, Pradyumna and, partly, Abhimanyu
Commander Drona, on day 13

Day 13: Abhimanyu’s last stand

  1. Arjuna drawn away. The Samshaptakas, warriors sworn to fight Arjuna to the death, lured him to another part of the battlefield.
  2. Drona’s formation. Drona arranged the Kaurava army in the chakravyuha. None of the Pandavas present could break it.
  3. Abhimanyu volunteers. He agreed to break in if the others followed through the breach.
  4. Jayadratha blocks the way. Abhimanyu smashed through, but Jayadratha, using a boon from Shiva that let him hold back all the Pandavas except Arjuna for one day, sealed the gap. Abhimanyu was alone inside.
  5. A storm of a boy. He killed many warriors, including Duryodhana’s son Lakshmana, and repeatedly drove back the greatest Kaurava fighters.
  6. The unfair attack. At Drona’s suggestion, several warriors — including Drona, Kripa, Karna, Ashwatthama and Kritavarma — attacked together. Karna cut his bow from behind; his horses and charioteer were killed.
  7. Fighting on foot. Abhimanyu fought on with a sword and shield, then with a chariot wheel, and finally with a mace.
  8. His death. Exhausted and wounded, he was struck down with a mace by the son of Dushasana.

Arjuna’s vow

Arjuna returned to find his son dead. Learning that Jayadratha had trapped Abhimanyu, he vowed to kill Jayadratha before sunset on the next day, or enter fire himself. On day 14, with Krishna’s help, he fulfilled the vow. See the full timeline in the 18 days of the Mahabharata war.

On the war’s final day, when Karna appealed to the rules of fair fighting, Krishna reminded him of how Abhimanyu had been killed.

Parikshit: Abhimanyu’s legacy

Abhimanyu’s wife Uttara was pregnant when he died. After the war, Ashwatthama turned the Brahmashira weapon on the unborn child. Krishna revived him, and he was named Parikshit, “the one who was tested”. Parikshit became king of Hastinapura, and it was to him, in his last seven days, that the sage Shuka narrated the Bhagavata Purana.

Lessons from Abhimanyu

Lesson From the story
Courage in duty He went in knowing the danger, because his side needed him
Half-knowledge is dangerous Knowing the way in but not the way out became a lasting metaphor
The cost of unfair means The attack on him is one of the war’s clearest breaches of dharma
Legacy beyond a short life Through Parikshit, the Pandava line continued

Today “Abhimanyu” is a byword for a young person facing overwhelming odds, and “trapped in a chakravyuha” describes any situation that is easy to enter but hard to leave.

For how Abhimanyu appears at the start of the Gita, read the Bhagavad Gita chapter 1 summary, and for his father’s story, who is Arjuna.
