Why India celebrates Childrenās Day on 14 November
Before 1964, India observed Childrenās Day on 20 November, in line with the Universal Childrenās Day recommended by the United Nations. After Nehru died in May 1964, the country chose to mark Childrenās Day on his birthday instead, as a tribute to a leader who often spoke of children as the future of the nation and of the importance of nurturing them with care.
Nehruās government also laid foundations that shaped childhood in independent India, including the expansion of schooling and the creation of national institutions for science and higher education. The day is therefore as much about public responsibility as about celebration.
Childrenās Day and World Childrenās Day
Indiaās Bal Diwas on 14 November is distinct from World Childrenās Day on 20 November, promoted by the United Nations and UNICEF. That date marks the adoption of the UN Declaration of the Rights of the Child in 1959 and the Convention on the Rights of the Child in 1989, which India ratified in 1992. Both days point to the same commitments: survival, protection, development and participation for every child.

- Let students lead the assembly, plan games, or run a class for a period.
- Hold reading hours, storytelling, quizzes, science or art activities instead of only performances.
- Talk with older students, in simple language, about childrenās rights, online safety and kindness.
At home
- Give children your undivided time: a walk, a board game, cooking together or a visit to a library.
- Let them choose the dayās plan within sensible limits.
- Share stories of your own childhood and the people who helped you grow.
In the community
- Donate books, stationery or warm clothes to a local school or shelter.
- Support organisations working on child nutrition, education and protection.
- Remember that celebrations should include every child, whatever their circumstances.
Childhood in Indian tradition
Indian stories have long celebrated childhood, from the play of the child Krishna in Vrindavan to the courage of young devotees such as Prahlada and Dhruva. Read the stories of Lord Krishna for some of the best-loved tales to share with children.
