Mahabali and Vamana
The story says that Mahabali’s power and popularity grew so great that the gods became concerned. Vishnu appeared as Vamana, a small Brahmin, and asked Mahabali for as much land as he could cover in three steps. Mahabali agreed.
Vamana then expanded to cosmic size. With two steps he covered the earth and the heavens. Mahabali offered his own head for the third step. Impressed by his generosity and humility, Vishnu granted him permission to return to his people each year.
What Onam celebrates
Onam honors generosity more than conquest. The pookalam, or flower carpet, welcomes Mahabali; the feast expresses abundance through shared food; and communal celebrations emphasize that prosperity has meaning when everyone can participate.
The festival invites a practical question: what would a fair and welcoming household look like today? Hospitality, food sharing, and care for neighbors are its most important offerings.
