Powerful Hanuman Mantras: 6 Chants with Meaning

A collection of Hanuman mantras, from Om Ham Hanumate Namah to the Hanuman Gayatri and short verses of courage and devotion.

Hanuman mantras are prayers to Hanuman, the devoted servant of Rama remembered for courage, humility, strength, and discernment. They are often recited on Tuesdays and Saturdays, or before a difficult task. The aim is not aggression or a guaranteed result: Hanuman’s example joins strength with service and self-control.

Hanuman mantras

Om Ham Hanumate Namah

Oṃ Haṃ Hanumate Namaḥ

“Om, salutations to Hanuman.” Haṃ is the seed syllable used in this well-known short Hanuman mantra. It is suitable for a simple daily japa practice.

Hanuman beej mantra

Oṃ Haṃ Hanumate Namaḥ

This complete salutation is commonly called the Hanuman beej mantra because of the seed sound Haṃ. It is the most accessible choice for beginners.

Hanuman Gayatri

Oṃ Āñjaneyāya Vidmahe Vāyuputrāya Dhīmahi,
Tanno Hanumān Pracodayāt.

“May we know Anjaneya; may we meditate on the son of Vayu; may Hanuman inspire us.” This longer verse is read as a prayer for clear and courageous understanding.

Manojavam Marutatulyavegam

Manojavaṃ Mārutatulyavegaṃ Jitendriyaṃ Buddhimatāṃ Variṣṭham,
Vātātmajaṃ Vānarayūthamukhyaṃ Śrīrāmadūtaṃ Śaraṇaṃ Prapadye.

“I take refuge in Rama’s messenger: swift as the mind and wind, master of the senses, foremost among the wise, son of the wind, and leader of the vanaras.” It is commonly recited before the Hanuman Chalisa.

Anjaneya Matipatalananalam

Āñjaneyam Atipāṭalānanaṃ Kāñcanādrikamanīyavigraham,
Pārijātatarumūlavāsinaṃ Bhāvayāmi Pavamānanandanam.

This dhyana verse contemplates Anjaneya, the wind-god’s son, in a radiant form. It is usually read once before a longer Hanuman prayer rather than counted as japa.

Om Anjaneyaya Namah

Oṃ Āñjaneyāya Namaḥ

“Om, salutations to Anjaneya,” the son of Anjana. This simple form is easy to remember and suits a brief remembrance before study, travel, or a demanding task.

How to chant these mantras

Morning or evening practice is suitable; Tuesdays and Saturdays are especially associated with Hanuman. Sit upright and begin with a moment of remembrance of Rama, Sita, and Hanuman. Repeat a short mantra 11, 21, or 108 times, or read a longer verse once with care. Learn pronunciation slowly. The Hanuman Chalisa is a complementary hymn, and it should be read with attention rather than rushed for a count.
