Month names follow the Purnimanta calendar used in North India, where the month ends on Purnima. In the Amanta calendar (Gujarat, Maharashtra and South India), each month ends on Amavasya and the same new moon carries the name of the previous month — for example, the 29 October Diwali Amavasya is Ashwina Amavasya in Amanta reckoning. The date does not change.

Special Amavasyas in 2027

  • Somvati Amavasya (8 March, 2 August, 27 December): Amavasya on a Monday is especially valued for holy baths, Shiva worship and prayers for the family’s well-being; married women traditionally circumambulate a peepal tree.
  • Mauni Amavasya (6 February): the Amavasya of Magha, kept in silence (mauna) with a holy dip. In 2027 it falls on a Saturday, so it is also a Shani Amavasya.
  • Jyeshtha Amavasya (4 June): Vat Savitri Vrat in North India and Shani Jayanti.
  • Sarva Pitru Amavasya (29 September): the final day of Pitru Paksha (16–29 September), when shraddha can be offered for all ancestors.
  • Kartika Amavasya (29 October): Diwali night and Lakshmi Puja.

Drik Panchang also lists solar eclipses (Surya Grahan) on 6 February and 2 August 2027. Whether an eclipse is visible — and whether its sutak applies — depends on your location, so check a local panchang before following eclipse rules.

What is done on Amavasya

  • Pitru tarpan and shraddha: every Amavasya is suitable for offering water, sesame and food to the ancestors. See Pitru Paksha meaning and significance.
  • Fast and charity: many people keep a simple fast and give food, especially on Somvati and Mauni Amavasya.
  • Lamp at dusk: lighting a diya under a peepal tree or at the household shrine is a common practice.
  • No new beginnings: Amavasya is usually avoided for weddings, griha pravesh and other new ventures.
