Purnima month names are the same in the Purnimanta (North Indian) and Amanta calendars, because both systems end the bright half of the month on the full moon.
Purnima vrat day and Purnima day
Drik Panchang lists two kinds of Purnima day:
- Purnima vrat (Pournami vratam): the day of the fast. If Purnima tithi starts during the midday period of the previous day, the fast is kept on that previous day (Chaturdashi).
- Purnima: the day used for holy baths (snan), charity (daan) and most festivals.
In 2027 the two differ for Shravana Purnima (vrat 16 August, Purnima and Raksha Bandhan 17 August) and Kartika Purnima (vrat 13 November, Purnima and Guru Nanak Jayanti 14 November). Sharad Purnima is a special case: the festival is celebrated on the night of 14 October, when the full moon rises during Purnima tithi, while the Ashwina Purnima vrat is on 15 October.
How Purnima is observed
- Fast: many devotees fast from sunrise until moonrise and end with an offering of water (arghya) to the moon.
- Satyanarayan puja: the most common Purnima puja in North Indian homes; read the Satyanarayan vrat katha in Hindi.
- Snan and daan: bathing in a sacred river at dawn and giving food or clothing, especially on Magha, Vaishakha and Kartika Purnima.
- Guru and lineage: Guru Purnima honours teachers; Buddha Purnima marks the Buddha’s birth, enlightenment and passing.
